Yoga Is For Everybody? Not Quite...

This 2-minute quiz shows you if yoga is for you. Or what you should do instead.

5 Reasons I Don’t Go to Yoga Studios

Yoga | Yoga for Beginners

I might want to start this off with a little disclaimer: I’m not totally against yoga studios; I actually think they’re great. But for me personally and my yoga practice, they just aren’t for me. Here are a few reasons why.

1. They’re expensive.

It’s not that I’m not willing to dish out some good cash to take yoga classes at a studio, it’s that I don’t want to be paying upwards of $200 a month (or week at some places) to go to one class a week, tops. I also want to practice yoga on my own time and not adhere to class schedules and whatnot.

2. I don’t want to compare myself to others.

Yoga is a very personal and self-reflective practice for me, so sticking me in a classroom with 30 other men and women at varying degrees of yoga abilities, my eyes are going to wander and of course I’m going to get self-conscious and compare myself with them!

3. I’m very picky when it comes to instructors.

Now I know that a lot of studios allow for drop-ins for classes, but I don’t really feel like going to every studio in the Los Angeles area to find just the right person when I can sit in my bedroom and browse through videos on YouTube (and trust me, I’ve found plenty of bad instructors on there, too) or go through the 30-Day Yoga Challenge with Erin Motz for the tenth time.

4. I’m not really up for being judged.

This one ties into number 2, but I’ll go ahead and give it its own number because I think it’s just as important to note.

I do yoga for me, not for others. I don’t feel like sitting in a room full of strangers and know that they’re judging my poses and my yoga mat and my yoga clothes. Just this morning I stuck Crow Pose for the first time, and no one was around to see it but me. And you know what? I’m totally okay with that!

5. The internet is an amazing resource nowadays.

With new yoga sites and yoga content on YouTube, Instagram, Vine, etc. popping up every day, yogis from around the world can connect and people like me can practice with knowledgeable instructors in the privacy of their own home.

I don’t need to sit in traffic for 45 minutes to go to a cramped studio in Silverlake to meditate for an hour and then sit in traffic all over again.
