RYT Yoga Trainer and Founder at Chesapeake Yoga & Wellness
Founder of Chesapeake Yoga & Wellness, Julie is a strong believer in the power of yoga to heal the body and the mind. As a student of yoga since her college years, Julie learned the power of meditation while in college that helped achieve more focus in daily activities. Julie, now an RYT 200, completed her teacher training 20 years later. While she enjoys many styles of yoga, including Para Yoga and Anusara, she mostly enjoys taking her yoga outdoors. As an avid sailor on the Chesapeake Bay, as well as a kayaker, skiier, bicyclist and stand up paddle boarder, Julie likes to blend the mindfulness of yoga with other activities - especially in the outdoors! As a certified ACA stand up paddleboard instructor, she brings her knowledge of yoga to the board, and other outdoor activities to teach students how to experience new ways of practicing yoga and mindfulness. Julie is the author of the Outdoor Yoga blog on DoYouYoga.com.

Yoga in the Motherland – Learning Vinyasa Krama On The Streets Of India

I’ve always been great at moving through big crowds, but not so great at tolerating them. Especially the people who just move aimlessly without noticing that they’re blocking traffic. However, strangely enough, when I found myself competing with cows, cars, motorcycles and other people to cross the street, I found it more of an interesting [...]

Walk into any yoga studio in the west, and you’re likely to find one or more of the following items: a Ganesh figure or banner; a Shiva sculpture in “nataraj” pose; an “OM” symbol in Sanskrit – and this one could be on student scarves, yoga mat bags, shirts, banners, a candle or anything else [...]

Who would have thought that clearing karma was easier than cleaning curry off a white pair of pants? Well, in India, it is. During my recent trip to India, I, of course, ate lots of wonderful food spiced with curry. Like the culture, the Indian food is intense, flavorful and can really leave a mark [...]

Just for a moment, imagine you are outside in the sun, sitting or walking with bare feet on a beach or a patch of soft grass in the park. We’ve all done it, but can you recall how you felt while you were visualizing that moment? Were you calm and relaxed? Did you feel grounded? [...]

While running down the trail the other day, I saw a number of turtles just sitting in the grass. Some were eating the grass, another just standing outside of his turtle home just basking in the warm sun. One was walking next to the trail. So, I decided to stop running and just slow down [...]

Try writing your name with your opposite hand. Unless you’re ambidextrous, this may be difficult and require you to slow down and think to do one simple thing that the other hand does every day. My guess is your brows will be crossed, your lips pursed or your tongue will stick – you know, those [...]

5 Ways To Practice Yoga On Your Bicycle

Hunching shoulders. Aching lower back. Wrist pressure. Fatigued knees and quad muscles. Sore butt. This “almost’ might sound like what your downward facing dog pose feels like after holding it for about an hour – but it’s actually how most cyclists feel after riding a bike for several miles – at least I do.
