Can Anyone Do A Yoga Teacher Training?

Teaching Yoga | Yoga

Question: Having practiced yoga for a few years now, I've been wondering how it would be to attend a yoga teacher training. What happens during the training? Can anyone do it, or do I need any special qualifications? Ömer L.

The Answer

Hey there brother, my simple answer is yes! Everyone and anyone can do a yoga teacher training. In fact, in many teacher trainings, you’ll find women who are over 50, men who had never done yoga before, students in college, and everyone in between. Sure, for many people, investing time and money in a teacher training is mainly due to the desire to be certified to teach yoga. But for many others, the practice, lessons, and overall experiences learned throughout the training are what really convince them to do it.

Different trainings teach different things. Many spend a lot of time on asana, while others focus on meditation and yoga philosophy. I recommend looking for a training that will not only be led by people you respect, but also a training that encompasses as many aspects of yoga as possible. Again, depending on what you’re looking to get out of the training, learning the Sanskrit names for poses may be more important than ensuring you know how to do a handstand, or vice-a-versa. If you really want to be a yoga instructor, I would strongly suggest doing a 200-hour training, as most studios and gyms look for at least that qualification when hiring.

Additional Tips

As I mentioned before, anyone can do a teacher training, regardless of age or experience level. Whether you’re a brand new yogi, or one who has been practicing for many years, it can almost be guaranteed that you will take away many valuable experiences. You’ll make great friends, and learn a lot. Just be sure to enjoy every minute of it!
