How to Transition to a Plant-Based Diet in 3 Easy Steps

Food | Lifestyle

So you know what foods to have lying around and you’ve got all the plant-based diet books you could possibly ever need. Now you’re ready to give it a go, but don't know how to get started? Cold-turkey works for some, but not all. Many say a gradual transition helped, and I have to say, that’s what worked for me. So, let’s get to it!

1. Remove Your Least Favorite Animal Product First

Never really cared for chicken? Make it the first to go. Sea dwellers give you the creeps? Kick ‘em to the curb. It’ll be an easy first step and will give you the confidence you need to move on to the next one. Easy peasy!

2. Reward Yourself

Entice yourself with a reward after a successful time period of abstaining from animal products. Start small – maybe it’s just one day at first – then, treat yourself to a favorite candy, glass of wine, or that shirt you saw in the J. Crew catalogue. Next, set your sights on three days for the second milestone. Eventually, you won’t need the treat as motivation to keep you going, nor will you want it. You’ll probably prefer fresh fruit instead!

3. Take It Easy

Remember, the change you’re undertaking is an admirable one and just because others may say it was easy for them, doesn’t mean that applies to everyone. If you cheat one day and have a turkey sandwich for lunch, don’t beat yourself up and get discouraged. Set your sights on tomorrow and promise to make it a successful day. You’ll be back on track in no time.

As you progress through the transition, you’ll begin to feel healthier and those cravings will subside. You may even notice that your yoga practice greatly improves. You’ll long for fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and treats made from whole foods and natural sweeteners. And, if you ever need encouragement or motivation, I’m just a comment box away!
