Lessons from a Yoga Rookie - A column by Catherine Richardson

I face the same dilemma every time I return to school from an extended vacation. Over these breaks from the “real world,” so to speak, I practice yoga daily – sometimes twice daily – because I have so much more time and energy than I do when classes are in session. I become this “super-yogi”. An elevated version of myself. I feel so much better, both physically and mentally, when I make time for yoga.

And then, I return to my life. There are classes and deadlines and stresses. There is more social drama. I de-prioritize nutrition, rest, and exercise. I am mentally scattered and over-stressed. Who is this girl and where is the real me?

Yoga Makes Me Feel Open And Free

I’ve realized, it’s easy to be healthy when you have tons of time and no cares in the world. But that doesn’t mean it’s not possible in every day life. We have to make time for yoga practices because they are one of the most important parts of our days.

I believe my yoga practice is the most important part of my day, partly because of the way it makes me feel in that moment, that day. Yoga makes me feel open and free. It nourishes my body and gives me strength and power. Simultaneously, it calms my minds and helps me control my thoughts. It gives me a little “yoga buzz” that I can take with me for the rest of the day.

Yoga Gives Me Strength And Optimism

But I also value the collective power of a daily practice. Yoga helps me cope with every day life because of the mental and physical strength it gives me. I become a better human when yoga is a regular part of my life. When peace is a part of my every day life. Connecting with my breath daily allows me an inner strength and optimism that just makes life better.

Yoga Gives Me Joy And Peace

Why do you value your yoga practice? I’ve found that as I’ve started verbalizing my reasons for committing to a regular yoga practice, I have been able to really understand the power of yoga. It is a transformative practice that brings joy and peace, not only to you, but also to others in your life. Isn’t that worth it to shift your schedule around a bit?

I can make time for yoga. I can pass on going to the movies with my friends. I can skip that show I wanted to watch. There are so many easy ways to fit yoga into my life, even when it’s stressful. I just have to try a little harder to find them. Maybe give up a few less important things. In the long run, I know I’ll be happier and healthier.
