5 Natural Ways To Relieve Anxiety

Sometimes we can get worked up and fry our nerves when we've had a busy day, or have some lingering jitters after a particularly stressful event. It happens to all of us, and if you know it's not pathological, there are some easy ways you can help beat it on your own.

Here are some ways I like to kick the anxiety when it creeps in:

1. Essential Oils

A few couple drops in the palms of the hands, then rub them together super fast to create some heat. Breathe it in and then gently massage the temples, third eye area, ears and whatever is left on the bottoms of the feet. I like to use anything grounding, particularly lavender, sandalwood, ylang ylang or spruce. Make sure you put some on right before bed to have a restful night.

2. 1-Minute Breath

Controlling the pace of the breath is hugely important when trying to control anxiety. If we keep a short, rapid pace in our breath, it's no wonder our nerves are fried. Take your time to breathe in for 30 seconds, and out for 30 seconds. Even if you can't get to 30 seconds, try to slow your inhales and exhales for as long as you comfortably can.

3. And on that note... Yoga!

But of course! Yoga increases the “feel-good” chemicals in our brain and can mellow us out over time. Releasing physical tension in areas we carry stress will have a domino effect on our mental health as well. Plus, we all know the benefits of meditation are far reaching. So even if you might be tempted, don't skip your next class. Your brain will thank you!

4. Walk outside.

This might seem counter intuitive to calming down, but sometimes we have excess energy that just need to go. Get outside in nature – no ipods allowed! – and get moving to get rid of some of the extra jitters and bring your energy to a more grounded state.

5. Hot tea

Warm liquids help calm the body while cold can create chills and make you feel more worked up than you already are. So stick to hot green or white tea that's comforting and make sure you slow your caffeine intake!
