Following in the footsteps of Glow, a light-up yoga mat created by a group of MIT students, comes the TERA fitness mat—another bright idea that brings technology not just to yogis, but to many different fitness enthusiasts.
Unlike the Glow, the TERA isn’t designed specifically for yogis (for one thing, it’s circular), but yoga is one of its suggested uses, along with Pilates, Zumba, Tae Bo, and simple stretching. The mat, made out of eco-friendly wool that is both wear- and slip-resistant, contains embedded LED lights as well as pressure sensors that analyze your performance with the specially designed TERA app.
It’s large enough to accommodate a full range of motion and, as if that weren’t enough, designer LUNAR Europe touts its use as an actual carpet that is suitable for use as décor when you’re not using it to work out.
How Does It Work?
Much like the Glow mat, TERA’s LED display demonstrates proper placement of the hands and feet. According to LUNAR Europe, the mat “leads the way and encourages you” in your choice of exercise; you can either analyze your own performance with the app or take the data to a personal trainer for suggestions.
The mat was created to transform people’s perception of home workout equipment—a phrase which for many people probably summons up images of an unused folding treadmill shoved under the bed along with dusty Thighmasters—and prove that workout tools can be beautiful and inspiring.
Although TERA is still only a design concept and is not available for purchase, it seems that the race is on to see who can design the coolest workout mat. What kind of technology would you like to see in the yoga mats of the future?Image credit: LUNAR Europe
