Anti-Pollution Skincare Tips & D.I.Y Facial Mask

Happiness | Lifestyle

Living in a city as bustling as Hong Kong comes at a cost: pollution. By the end of a long day, there is nothing more soothing than a thorough cleanse and a nice at home facial. Here are some of my favorite tips to keep our skin looking beautiful no matter what.

1. You Are What You Eat

Before you read on and think I may have a holy solution to gorgeous skin – don’t forget everything comes from the inside out. What we apply on our skin is only secondary. We need to lead healthy lifestyles, get moving and fill up our plates with colorful natural fruits and vegetables. Drink herbal teas and water to keep your body healthy. Only then my following tips will help you enhance your natural beauty.

2. Don’t Skimp On Your Skincare

Always cleanse, moisturize and apply sunscreen daily! Keeping your skin clean, hydrated and protected from the damaging sun rays will definitely help maintain your skin’s elasticity and radiance. Even on a cloudy day you need sunscreen. It’s a myth that if you don’t see the sun, the rays are not there. The sun in all its glory is the main culprit of many of our skin woes, including dark spots, age spots, wrinkles and much more. So, protect your skin and soak up the sun in moderation!

3. Use Anti-Oxidant Packed Products

Whether it is a green tea toner or an acai berry serum, look for face products with anti-oxidants. In cities, free radicals are rampant in the air. Free radicals are created when oxidation occurs, which is a natural part of life. If not neutralized by anti-oxidants, they can be harmful to our skin, causing wrinkles. The best way to neutralize them is of course eating a hearty amount of our favorite fruits and vegetables – but for extra protection, opt for an anti-oxidant enhanced face product.

Bonus Mask Recipe

After a productive day running errands and working in the city, one of the best things to come home to is your own D.I.Y spa. Especially in Hong Kong, where the weather is generally pretty humid, I like to purify my face with a clay mask. A simple D.I.Y recipe:

Mix together 1 tbsp of kaolin clay, and a splash of aloe vera water or rose water. Apply on cleansed face for 10 minutes and rinse off. For added benefits, you may add a bit of honey or a few drops of essential oils to your mask.

Enjoy!
