Tis the season for eating, celebrating and merriment. Bring on the pumpkin pie, delicious potato casserole with the crunchy bits on top (why is that so good?!) and creamy hot chocolate. Treating yourself, especially around this time of year, is a good thing. Now, go ahead and pick your jaw up off the floor now- a vegan yoga teacher just gave you permission to eat a plate of brownies! Before you high tail it to the kitchen and abandon forms of exercise, let me explain…
It’s so important to spend time with loved ones reminiscing and reconnecting. Connecting over food or drink is what we do. Ever notice how people always gather in the kitchen during a party? We all seek nourishment and not always in the form of a greasy cheeseburger. We seek and value connection. Sure yoga teaches us that we are all one but man, is that easy to forget. When it has been a long day at work, when it gets dark at 5:30 and when it is just plain easier to isolate rather than engage, that is when connection is the most important. Invite a friend over for a cup of hot cider or host a cookie swap (find some fabulous vegan cookie recipes here, if you are into that type of thing). By all means, connect over food.
It’s good to indulge. I am a firm believer in indulging. It’s also important that you balance that indulgence by taking care of yourself. Know that there is a place for savoring and a place for caring for your body. It’ not one or the other (perhaps I should put that in all CAPS). That’s balance and that’s yoga. Very often, what is true on the mat also rings true in life. It’s the balance between tension and ease that enables us to get deeper into a pose. It’s the balance between rooting down and extending through our crown that allows us to stand taller. It’s the balance between indulging and caring for our bodies that leads to true nourishment.
So while diving in deep to the season of indulging, remember to take care of yourself. Seek out online yoga classes (many are free or nearly free), take your dog for an extra long walk, drink lots of water and incorporate some extra twists into your normal stretching routine. Your body will thank you in the form of glowing skin, easy digestion and a deep sense of connection to those around you. Cheers!
