How Yoga Teaches Self-Reliance

Swami Vivekandanda says, 'We are responsible for what we are and whatever we wish ourselves to be. We have the power to make ourselves." The very first yoga sutra states, "now begins the study of yoga." This implies that the student is ready and accepts responsibility for learning. In other words, no one "makes" us do anything. We are accountable. The shift to taking responsibility for our lives is vital in accessing yoga’s power and transforming your life. In this way Yoga teaches self-reliance.

A well-balanced yogi understands that when on the mat, we must be present to what's going on moment by moment. This is why accountability and self-relilance go hand in hand. These qualities are the foundation for being present to what life is offering you.

These three habits detract from accepting responsibility. Commit yourself to eliminating them:

  1. Reverse any tendency you have to make comparisons.
  2. Quit talking about what you don't have compared to what you have;
  3. Stop complaining about how you are doing career-wise, relationship-wise, or any other-wise.

No matter what challenges we face we must learn to save ourselves. Do not wait for someone else to come along (the proverbial white night). Instead of living life as a spectator watching and waiting, jump in and propel yourself forward. Just like holding yourself up in that first downward facing dog, you have to tap into the strength you already possess that wants to be engaged. As Felix Baumgartner writes, “don’t live life as a spectator. always examine life: espouse new ideas, long for new things, constantly discovering new interests, escaping from boring routines. engage life with enthusiasm; grasping life aggressively and squeezing from it every drop of excitement, satisfaction, and joy. The key to unleashing life’s potential is attitude. The person who is best prepared to defy limitations of time, is more “alive”, more of a participant in life than the person who remains a spectator.”
