Human Sustainability: How to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Your Energy

While ecological sustainability is important, establishing and maintaining quality human sustainability is just as vital.

Our environment will not succumb to our every human desire for comfort. Instead, we’re meant to thrive by balancing our own energetic consumption. We have a responsibility for sustaining human relationships in a healthy way.

According to the EPA,sustainability is “a simple principle: everything that we need for our survival and well-being depends, either directly or indirectly, on our natural environment. Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony.”

What can we do promote this harmony? More than using LED light bulbs, composting, filling our recycle bins, switching to low-flow toilets, and driving electric cars, we must learn to manage our personal energy reservoir and keep it strong. Why? Because nature depends upon it.

Everything you need,you already have. It’s up to you to not waste your energy, but instead discern how to use as little as necessary to maintain a meaningful life. Here are some key suggestions to maximize your social and ethical contribution to ecological sustainability.

1. Reduce

The greatest way to have more energy is to let go of something. Create routine recapitulation exercises. Learn how to let go of what you don’t need.

  • It works well all day and night to let go of the one or two repeated unhealthy thoughts pulling our energy out of us.
  • At night, practice a meditation. Say to yourself, “I call my energy back to me.” Imagine enormous golden scissors above you cutting the ties to everyone you met or thought about during the day or those that have thought about you. This way your night can be really replenishing.
  • Unplug from technology one hour before bed. Read, write, meditate, practice gentle yoga, and spend time with your loved ones.
  • Every three to six months, book time off. Try a yoga retreat where you get off the grid and completely disconnect from the pop culture, the internet, social media, and technology.

2. Reuse

Repurpose what serves you just like birds reuse items to build their nest. Even air is reused as we exhale carbon dioxide to the trees and reuse what they give us as oxygen. Save energy through reusing what you can so you don’t have to start from scratch.

  • Try taking a break from consumerism: challenge yourself to not purchase any new clothing for two months and instead trade clothes with friends or shop resale stores. A dear friend and mother of two just finished a year of doing this.

3. Recycle

Get organized with your schedule. Keep consistent with some of it, but leave space to allow new events to fill in. At the very least, recycle your newly found downtime with a new ritual of self-care methods.

  • Whether you slim your media diet by disconnecting from email and scheduling a bath on Tuesday nights, or by meditating and exercising mid-week, recycle by doing things that restore your energy and releasing the ones that don’t.

When you reduce, reuse, and recycle your energy, you become more balanced emotionally, mentally, and physically. Try it for yourself and see!
