What Are Mantras and What Makes Them So Powerful?

Yoga | Yoga for Beginners

What’s in a mantra? According to yoga, quite a lot.

Meditating with mantras is one of the most powerful ways to quiet the fluctuations of the mind. A mantra is a tool for the mind, and it allows our awareness to more easily turn inward.

For times in your life when you have a lot of thoughts that seem to be driving you crazy, a mantra practice is an effective form of meditation which can be implemented during those times when you’re feeling depressed, confused, or have far too many negative thought patterns.

It’s an especially good meditation tool for beginners and a type of sound technology which has profound effects on our brain waves. Chant mantras out loud, or to yourself, as both methods work in both different and positive ways.

Mantra as a Sound Form of the Divine

Yoga teaches us that a mantra is a sound form of the Divine. It’s a sound form of the Great Consciousness. Different mantras relate to different aspects of the Great Consciousness, which are often expressed in the form of deities.

These sound forms are the subtlest in the world and also one of the most powerful ways to invoke the divine aspect of your own Self.

There are particular mantras that invoke different aspects of the divine feminine, or the goddesses of the yogic pantheon, and you can use these mantras and their corresponding goddess presences to bring great things into your life.

Shreem

“Shreem” evokes the presence of the goddess Lakshmi, an aspect of the Divine Feminine who represents the power of auspiciousness, harmony and abundance. She is said to bring both material and spiritual wealth and prosperity.

If you want to bring more financial abundance into your life, you’ll want to practice with the mantra “shreem.” To bring even more power to this mantra, practice it on Fridays at dusk.

Aim

If you desire to expand your knowledge and tap into your inner muse, you’ll want to meditate on the mantra associated with the goddess Saraswati. She’s the goddess of creativity.

Saraswati represents the pursuit of art, philosophy, music and higher learning. Need help before a big exam? Call in Saraswati. Looking for a dose of daily inspiration? Meditate with the mantra “aim.” Aim is Saraswati’s mantra.

Om Mani Padme Hum

One of the most powerful Buddhist mantras is “Om Mani Padme Hum.” Roughly translated, it means “jewel in the lotus,” a reference to both compassion and wisdom, which are both necessary for attaining enlightenment.

If you want to become a more calm, wise and compassionate human begin, meditate with this mantra, and get in touch with your inner Buddha nature.

Om, or Aum, is the vibration of the Universe. It’s been called the sound vibration for God and all of creation. “Om mani padme hum,” the star of Buddhist mantras, is perfect for cultivating more compassion – for yourself and for others.

The world of mantra is vast. Have fun exploring which ones resonate with your soul.
