You don’t have to go to a yoga class and be guided by a teacher to experience all the benefits the practice has to offer. Most people don’t even consider practicing at home because they have no idea where to start, and end up taking classes thinking it’s their only option.
But there’s actually more reasons to practice yoga at home, and here’s four of them.
1. It’s convenient.
Since taking yoga classes requires a serious time commitment working around someone else’s schedule, having to get there, in addition to the 60 plus minutes of instruction, it can be difficult to fit in your practice as often as you’d like.
Practicing yoga at home can happen whenever you want, for as long as you want, which will enable you to do more yoga more often.
Your yoga mat is always ready and waiting for you at home.
2. It’s less expensive.
Going to a yoga class can be extremely expensive. Most of my friends don’t go because they simply can’t afford it. Buying a handful of yoga DVDs will cost about the same as one or two classes, and you’ll be able to try all different styles without having to pay for numerous types of classes.
There are hundreds of quality yoga DVDs with expert instructors available to choose from. Take advantage of that. Plus, online yoga has become quite popular more recently and you can take it with you wherever you go.
3. It builds confidence.
Whether you’re new to yoga or a full-blown, long-time yogi, practicing yoga at home enables you to feel free and try different poses you wouldn’t necessarily want to attempt in front of a class.
For some people, yoga can be intimidating in itself, so practicing in the privacy of your own home will build your confidence on and off of the mat. Over time and with practice, you’ll learn to create your own sequence of your favorite poses, build upon them, and grow even stronger and deeper in your practice.
4. You can get friends and family involved.
There’s no better way to connect with the people closest to you than through yoga.
If you’re practicing yoga at home, there’s a much better chance of this happening. Ask a girlfriend to try a few poses with you or show your mom how yoga can relieve some of her back pain. Plan a practice with someone special in your life a few times a week, and motivate each other.
