Yoga Is For Everybody? Not Quite...

This 2-minute quiz shows you if yoga is for you. Or what you should do instead.

5 Things I Love About Being A Yoga Teacher

Teaching Yoga | Yoga

I’ve got to be honest with you guys, I feel as though I’ve hit the jackpot when it comes to the work I do. Imagine being able to spend your time and energy on something that fills your heart and fulfils your soul AND get paid for it? Seriously. Pinching myself over here.

The reasons I love teaching yoga are vast. I could probably write a novel but for the sake of your eyes and your schedule, here’s a fairly succinct list that explains why this is more a blessing than a job.

1. Seeing your light.

Everyone has the most beautiful light shining within them and the more we practice yoga, the brighter that light shines. Yoga facilitates an experience of the self and opens us up to our own potential and boundless possibilities. As a teacher, every class gives me the opportunity to see that light radiating from within people as they move and breath and connect within themselves.

And the online yoga world is just as uplifting because your light is so obvious through your comments, your stories and the way you express your love for yoga. So thank YOU for sharing your light within this community. It’s a total privilege to see.

2. Witnessing students experience “yoga.”

It’s nice to imagine that students spend the entire 60 or 90 minutes in a state of unadulterated bliss, but realistically when you practice in a group, there’s always distractions that can take your focus away from your mat. There are, however, moments during a yoga class where we all experience an elevated state of complete connection, even if it’s just a couple of seconds. When we embody the pose, when the mind is focused and still, and the breath is flowing seamlessly through our body, we experience yoga.

As a teacher, knowing that students in the class may be experiencing their own moments of yoga is truly uplifting and inspiring.

3. Being of service to others and making a difference.

We’re all motivated by different things but essentially, there’s something within all of us that wants to help, inspire and serve other people in some way. Because I believe in the transformative, healing, rejuvenating, restorative and uplifting powers of yoga, I’m driven to support and encourage people to step on the mat and keep returning back. And I feel that by doing that, I’m making a positive difference.

That’s why I’m happy to get up 4am to teach. That’s why I’m happy to teach classes for free if people can’t afford them. That’s why I write articles that I hope in some way inspire your practice.

4. Softens my edges and makes me totally present.

You could say by nature I’m a bit of a Type A personality, or in Ayurveda lingo, a Rajasic Pitta Vata. I have yoga to thank for mellowing me out, but I admit I still have the potential to be taken away from the present moment with a somewhat obsessive sense of determination. While practicing yoga is incredible, teaching yoga softens my edges and brings me to the present moment in a way that my practice often doesn't. There’s just something so inspiring about seeing a group of people consciously come together to nourish their own physical and internal well-being.

5. Wearing yoga clothes all the time.

Okay guys, I know this reason isn’t making the world a better place BUT it had to go on the list.

So go forth and hit the mat, yogis. And keep inspiring all of us with your radiance and your yoga.
